In the mid to late 1980’s, Glen Stanley explored the area he called ‘Avalanche Valley’ with a few other friends. Later, the Ozalenka Club built the Avalanche Valley and Kristi Glacier trails using forestry money and employing David Salayka, a contractor, to build the trail.Â

The name Avalanche Valley was given in order to discourage machine operators from using the trail by ‘scaring them away’. This was not successful in accomplishing that goal!
The name Caribou Lake was given because the lake feeds the Caribou River, which flows toward Bowron Lakes Provincial Park.
Roberts Glacier water all runs to the Castle (Cottonwood) River. This lake is fed by springs where the campsite is, at the east end, so the water in the lake is always clear.
