This trail was created by Dave King, Dieter, and Thea Koppe in the 1980s, shortly before ‘The Vineyards’ trail was envisioned. In those days, there was a logging road west of Caledonia Mt, and this group liked the area and the beautiful views that could be seen. The fact that there were two lakes in the area made it an attractive place to build a trail. The group cut out most of the trail, and afterwards the logging company was burning a slash pile, which burned out of control and moved up the hillside on the trail, which is still visible to this day.
Dave King had to recut the trail after the burn due to a large number of deadfall in the burn area. On a flight above the area, Dave King was counting Caribou on a work trip, and he spotted a cave. Dave and Mike Nash later went to explore the cave and quickly discovered it was quite dangerous, as there was ice deep down inside, which almost claimed a person’s life. There are other caves in the area as well, which can be rediscovered by well-prepared individuals.
