Trail History of Murray Mt in the Pine Pass

In the summer of 1982, Mike Nash was vacationing with family at the popular Azouzetta Lodge area near Powder King ski hill. As often occurs, his eyes gazed upon the stunning display surrounding the lake, towering high above, into the alpine region, which boasted a new challenge consisting of alpine lakes and surreal flowering meadows. Mike scanned his topographic map to find a draw leading up towards the summit of Mt Murray, just a short distance north of his current camping site. Fighting his way through sections of steep, brushy terrain, he found several game trails that assisted in the journey upwards toward his glorious prize.

After his successful trip, Mike returned with longtime friend George Evanoff to explore the potential of a trail leading to this newfound treasure in the mountains of the Pine Pass. A year later, in 1983, working with the Caledonia Ramblers, a trail was roughed into the mountainside and added to the list of hiking adventures in the region.

This region has a rich history of game outfitters (such as the donkey trail further north) and mysterious rumours of caves, hot springs, and underground lakes. In the late 1990’s, the area east of Highway 97 became the Lemoray Provincial Park.
