Trail History of Baldy Mountain near Longworth BC
Comment 0

This mountain has had several names over the years; the earliest was shared by Clarence Boudreau (Penny Slim), who heard an old timer (who lived west of Penny in 1910) tell Clarence he knew the mountain as ‘Granite Mountain‘. As of April 2026, Google Maps shows Baldy Mt as ‘Longworth Peak’, which is incorrect, as Longworth Peak is the Peak directly west of Baldy with a cabin on the top (which used to be a fire lookout but has since been rebuilt by pgbrs.org)

Since at least the mid-1900s, locals have called this Baldy Mountain, with several hunters, including Clarence and Jack Boudreau, making their way up a creek canyon from Penny BC to glass the mountainside of Baldy.

Dave King shared a story when the Caledonia Ramblers made a club trip to the Red Mountain cabin above Penny, BC Dave hiked solo toward Baldy Mountain one afternoon in 1983. In those days, there were remnants of a lot of ice on the northeast side of Baldy. After summitting Baldy, he was making his way back to the cabin on Red Mountain when he encountered a grizzly bear cub in a section that he required passage in order to get back to camp. Nervously, he wondered where the mother was. On one side was a steep drop-off cliff, and above it the slope he needed to pass, but a lone Grizzy Club blocked his route. The cub ran up to a group of trees and went behind them, disappearing, as the hair stood up on the back of his neck… Where was Momma Bear? Dave went slightly down the slope and made his way back to camp, grateful that he never discovered where Momma Bear was hiding!

Since the late 1990’s, Dave King had been looking to build a trail up Baldy Mountain along with Mike Nash. Eventually, Dave King and Hardy Griesbaur worked together on the final route from the Fraser Flats FSR to the Summit of Baldy Mt, and the trail opened in October of 2022

On August 28, 2023, on a hike hosted by the Caledonia Ramblers, Steve Pavich suffered a heart attack and passed away. The following summer, a memorial bench was placed at the 1/2 way point as a memory to Steve and his life. Steve’s wife (Lynn) and other family members made the tough hike up to the bench and some to the summit in his honour.
