Bad news: access to Kakwa is compromised. Just got an update from Forestry as follows:

Be advised the Walker Forest Service Road is closed at 56 km and beyond. Load ratings for bridges at 56.1 km, 61.5 km, 65.4 km, 67.5 km, and 69.2 km have been downrated to 0 tonnes capacity.

I asked of the bridges will be removed and heard the following reply:

Near term, the road will be barricaded at 56 km.

Long term will be dependant on funding to rebuild the road.

July 20,2026:

BC Parks and Rec Sites and Trails have been made aware of the downrating of the bridge structures which has led to the Walker FSR’s current closure.

At this point in time discussions are happening regarding both the importance of and the complexity of this road and its multiple structures.

Decisions regarding the future of this road are currently being considered by the Ministry of Forests and will take into consideration all available information.

July 24, 2026:

Notice: The Walker FSR from 45km to 50km during the week of July 27th to July 31st will have extended periods during the day with no access. Old culverts are being removed and replaced so the road will be excavated with no vehicle access during those times.

Also sporadic times the following week (Aug 4 – 7) culvert repairs will occur between 13km and 21km which may have open excavation and associated delays.
